Two wings raised over the stargate symbol.
Because things are getting a bit hard to find, here's a master list of most of my fic. Some of the older stuff is not here because, well, it's a bit sketchy quality-wise.

WIP Meme

Two wings raised over the stargate symbol.
So there's another WIP meme going around, the usual 'post interesting snippets of mysterious fics' sort of thing, and since I just finished the school project that was sucking up my writing time I decided to go ahead and take part.

I'm chugging away at my [livejournal.com profile] stargate_summer fic now, although I'm still working on other things and school stuff. I've run into a bit of an issue that I could use some advice on. As mentioned before, I'm going with the popular "Tok'ra Cam" idea from my pinch hit. The problem comes from the fact that there's several Tok'ra running around. If you think threesomes cause pronoun confusion, try writing about a conversation in which several people are sharing bodies.

1) What do people think is the best way to indicate silent, internal communication between host and symbiote? I'm leaning towards using italics since that's a fairly conventional way of indicating thoughts. However, that leads to the next point:

2) How do indicate who is speaking? Does it work just to go with, "Sam said" versus "Jolinar said" to mark the difference? Or does there need to be some kind of stylistic indication?

3) The big one is all the other stuff the crops up with conversations. In general, since it seems like one half of the Tok'ra pairs is usually dominant* - ie Marty is usually speaking rather than Lantash, Anise more than Freya, etc - and it's from Cam's point of view, I can just go with one for most actions. However, in conversations, you have things like nods and gestures and so forth. I'm not sure what would best for making it clear who's doing what.

4) Pronouns - are Sam/Jolinar 'she' or 'they'?

Thanks for any suggestions or advice you have.

The first TEN people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level. (Or don't, whatever floats your boat. Also, for convenience's sake, please post over on Dreamwidth.)

Below is a list of fandoms I can do. You guys more or less know how I roll with regards to pairings and so forth, but feel free to toss something weird or cracky at me. If I for some reason I can't do it, I'll tell you. (I reserve the right to refuse to write your Ba'al/Todd/Zachariah threesomes or whatever, you sick people.)

Fandoms which I regularly write:

Stargate Atlantis
Stargate SG-1
Supernatural (no Wincest, please)

Fandoms which I enjoy but haven't played around with, requester beware.

Merlin
Criminal Minds
Southland
Torchwood
Doctor Who
Battlestar Galactica
Sanctuary
Farscape (been years since I watched it)
NCIS (sorta-kinda)

Title: Recruiting Scout
Author: [personal profile] slybrarian
Pairings: Cam/John
Rating: PG-13
Words: 3,315
Notes: [community profile] sg_flyboys pinch hit. Beta by [personal profile] dossier. The idea of "Project Narcissus" largely based on a conversation with [personal profile] bluflamingo.

Summary: Cam is sent to recruit someone who may be essential for the upcoming Atlantis expedition: John Sheppard. Of course, since this is John, things are more complicated than they should be.

(Project Narcissus indicates a 20% failure rate without Sheppard...)

So, it's that time of year again. If you didn't know, sign-ups for the Summer of Stargate start this Friday. I'll be signing up and you should to. You know you want to!

I have a couple of ideas floating in my head at the moment. Both are AU/fusions. The first I was considering would be a Young Wizards fusion, focused primarily on Cam, Sam, and John (with bonus Lorne, probably). Going by canon dates, they're all close in age, and if I set it around 1987 they'd all be seventeen-ish. Teal'c and Vala, obviously, are much older, but I can fit them in too, and Daniel and Jack would at least get cameos. I have a vague plot idea that's something like A Wizard's Holiday involving the Goa'uld, and possibly some main themes involving wizardry in personal life - specifically Cam's dad and probably John's mom - and also conflict between wizardry and service in the more traditional Mitchell military fashion. However, they're some philosophical and thematic problems with this idea. For example, why don't Cam and company just blast Ba'al and Apophis into chunky salsa? (And why didn't someone splatter, say, Hitler, Stalin, or Pol Pot?)

Idea 2, and my current favorite, would be set in the Eclipse Phase universe. (Anyone who likes RPGs should check it out - you can download the core book for free because it's under Creative Commons.) It's a post-apocalyptic transhuman setting, where just a few years earlier there was a hard-takeoff singularity where the TITANS, military cyberwarfare AIs, went rampant and killed ninety-odd percent of humanity and basically everyone on Earth (well, hopefully killed - many of their robots were cutting off heads and forcibly uploading people, for nefarious purposes.) Also, tell me at least a couple of these lines aren't perfect SG-1 attitudes:

Your mind is software. Program it.
Your body is a shell. Change it.
Death is a disease. Cure it.
Extinction is nearing. Fight it.

Similar to the SG-universe. There are Pandora Gates that open wormholes to other planets, so I could have SG-1 as a team of gate explorers, or as members of the Firewall organization that protects transhumanity against various extinction events. Because I'm geeky that way, I've even statted up a couple of SG-1 members. This would again be Cam-centric. I think I may go with this one. I mean, for one thing, it has uplifted octopuses. Seriously.

Actually, going with the setting's themes vs Jaffa background, Teal'c would probably be an uplift or an AI in a combat robot, fighting for the rights of said uplifts and AIs. This setting would probably be a bit darker, even with effective immortality, because of the universe's grittiness and the looming feeling of doom. Then again, this is SG-1 - they might kick weakly godlike ass. This story would probably be gen.

Why did no one tell me that Criminal Minds is so awesome? I don't normally go for procedurals, although I watch NCIS reruns when I'm having dinner with my parents, but after reading [personal profile] jujuberry136's SPN crossover I gave it a try. I found that I really liked it and basically mainlined the entire series over the last, oh, two weeks. It seems a lot more intelligent and realistic than most crime shows and I enjoy the characters a lot, especially Reid, Garcia, and Morgan. Not that I don't like JJ, Prentiss, and Hotch, too, because I do. Not so much Rossi, though, but that's more of a 'blah' than an active dislike. *shrug*

Anyways, does anyone have suggestions as to where to find good fics? Preferably gen or slash (especially Reid/Morgan), but I'll check out het if it's good.

Full-length stories written (Over 1000 words): 25
- 2 fics over 60,000 Words, for the SG1 and SGA Big Bangs
- 4 in the 25-30k range

Shorts: 36 - Mostly Comment Fic

Total word count: 373,545 (Yikes! Mostly Discontinuity fics.)

Pairing Stats: I'm not sure of the exact stats, but I'll put them in rough order.

Sheppard/Mitchell, Sheppard/Lorne, Sheppard/Lorne/Mitchell, Lorne/Parrish all have multiple fics. After that it's mostly one-off mentions, including Dean/Freya (I'm not sure whose taste is worse), Lorne/Mitchell, Mehra/Porter, and several Mitchell variants from the Ripple fic.

More yammering below. )

A serious issue has developed with my desktop computer. It over the last couple of days it has been crashing intermittently, and today it became completely unusable. This is a bit annoying, as I was mainlining Criminal Minds over break and it's not on my netbook.

Basically, after the computer is on about six to ten minutes, it will completely freeze up. The screen just stalls and if music is playing it will make that weird stuttering noise that I'm sure you've all heard. At first I assumed it was Vista acting up and did a virus scan and all that. (This was before it was crashing quite as fast.) However, I tried a live CD of both Ubuntu and PuppyLinux and they crashed as well. In fact, even the Windows memory test thing froze suddenly. The one exception is that one time when loading Ubuntu is stalled and started displaying error messages about (I think) bad locations? or something like that. When I reset it, it will not beep and show the normal pre-loading splash screen like it should, but instead just make a regular noise that's sort of like a click. I've tried restarting, turning power off, and killing it with the switch on the rear, but it will keep doing the same thing. However, after several tries (maybe five or ten minutes?) it will start up correctly again.

This makes me think that it's a hardware issue, but I have no idea how to tell what it might be. I haven't changed anything since I built the computer in Nov 08. I don't see anything obviously loose inside, there's no dust, and the fans are spinning like they should be. There are no problems accessing the hard disks, DVD drive, or things like the wireless dongle. I built the computer myself, but all I did was basically buy some suggested parts and plug things in, and as I said it's been working pretty well for the past year.

Help me, subscription/friends list, you're (not quite) my only hope.

ETA: It appears to have been a loose RAM chip. Thanks to everyone who left suggestions.
